Description:

Aerin is the daughter of the king of Damar, but she doesn't seem to have inherited anything that would mark her as royalty. In Damar, those with royal blood have a certain inherited magic, but Aerin is long past the age when her magic gifts should have appeared. She is a misfit in other ways, as well: she prefers riding her horse and training with the sword to other activities considered more suitable for a daughter of the king. Because of her differences, and because her mother was an outsider from the North, she is scorned and ridiculed by members of the court.

When Aerin comes across an ancient book about dragons and how to battle them, her life is changed forever. She becomes Aerin the dragon killer, rooting out the nasty, vicious beasts whenever they appear to harass a village. But the dragons of her time, while dangerous, are fairly small, unlike the large, awesome beasts of legend. And so, while Aerin earns some small measure of respect for her services, she also earns more ridicule for her "odd" avocation. Until Maur, the legendary Black Dragon appears, and Aerin is the only one who has the knowledge to battle it. Aerin must face the Black Dragon in a battle that will lead her to her true destiny.

Mom's Review:

This book has a poignant and exciting story, characters you really care about, heros and love and battles, dragons and magic. What more could you want in a fantasy? This is truly a book that you lose yourself in. The Newbery Medal that it earned is well-deserved! This may not be a book for dragon-lovers, however: the dragons in this book are vicious beasts with no redeeming qualities.
