Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Teens
Description:Earth is dying, and Pattie, Joe, Sarah, and their father are traveling on a colony ship to a new world. Weight and space are limited on the ship, so each is only allowed to bring one book. After a long journey, they finally arrive on the new world, which Pattie is given the honor of naming, and she names it Shine. They discover many wonders on their new world, but life on Shine is hard. There is very little living on Shine that is edible, and worse of all, it appears that the seeds they brought with them aren't growing right on Shine. The colony looks doomed, and it's up to the children to find the future for the colony.
Mom's rating: 4.0 wands Mom's Review:The alien world of Shine is fascinating, and it's interesting to read about how the colonists adapt to their new world. There's very little that's scary or disturbing in this book, although some will be upset when the rabbits die. The book is fairly short and an easy read, making it a good starter science fiction book for children.
