Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Teens
Description:15-year old Alfred Kropp isn't looking for adventure when he agrees to help his uncle steal a priceless sword. All he wants is to help his last remaining family member and to stay out of foster care. But adventure finds Alfred anyway, and soon he finds himself traveling around the world in the company of a modern day knight, battling the forces of darkness who are intent on using the sword to take over the world.
David's rating: 5.0 wands David's Review:Quite interesting. I find that the plot is very well written, and hard to put down this story. This is one book you do want to read! Though a little bit violent for younger children, this book is perfectly wonderful.
Mom's rating: 5.0 wands Mom's Review:An action-packed story with modern day knights and fast cars and secret societies and a magical sword - what more could you ask for? This is the kind of story that people seem drawn to read. I'm not sure why, because I don't think the U.S. cover is very interesting, (I've seen pictures of the U.K. cover and it looks much more exciting) but something about this book makes you want to read it. I took it with me to read on a recent vacation, and before too long I was sharing it with both my son and my niece, and another niece was eyeing it with interest. The story is exciting, the characters, especially Alfred and his mentor/knight Bennacio, are interesting and likeable, and the author injects just the right touch of humor to keep the story fun. I hope that Rick Yancey writes more books about Alfred. I'd like to see what adventures find Alfred next!
