Description:

Leven Thump's mother dies when he is born, leaving him in the not-very-tender care of his mother's half-sister Addy and her husband Terry. Addy and Terry make Leven sleep on the porch, and his life with them is miserable. But when a twelve inch tall creature, a sycophant named Clover, appears under his bed one night, Leven learns that he is destined for greater things. For Leven is the only one who can save Foo, the land responsible for dreams. Foo is threatened by an evil being named Sabine, and if Foo is destroyed, then all hope on Earth will die.

Mom's Review:

This is one of the most imaginative books that I have read. Unfortunately, it proves the point that imaginative doesn't always mean enjoyable, and I really didn't enjoy this book much. Author Obert Skye's view of the world is too grim, and most of the people we meet besides the heroes are either mean or incredibly disgusting, or both. The "ick" factor in this book is rather high, and several scenes turned my stomach. I suppose some people enjoy that kind of thing, but I don't. I enjoy dark fantasy, but this isn't dark, it's just grim. With such a grim world, it's hard to understand the insistence on saving Foo to preserve hope on Earth; the Earth of this book seems to have very little hope to begin with.
