Description:

The war against Voldemort has begun, and things aren't looking good for Harry. First, he's stuck at the Dursley's with no news from his friends and no word from Dumbledore. But things don't get any better when he returns to the wizarding world: he's accused of breaking the decree for the restriction of underage sorcery and may be expelled; he discovers that the Daily Prophet has been portraying him as a laughable lunatic and the Ministry of Magic doesn't believe that Voldemort has returned; and Dumbledore seems to be ignoring him. Even spending time at the headquarters of The Order of the Phoenix isn't nearly as exciting as it sounds as no one will tell Harry and his friends what is going on. Worst of all, though, is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Dolores Umbridge, who seems to go out of her way to make Harry's life at Hogwarts miserable.

Mom's Review:

Another masterpiece from J.K. Rowling. There's a lot going on in this book, with plenty of excitement, new revelations and new questions! Harry and his friends are growing up and begin to take on adult burdens and adult responsibilities. Fred and George really come into their own in this book and in one scene they had me cheering. Parents should be aware that this is the darkest book yet, although in a more subtle way than Goblet of Fire. It's been well publicized, so I think everyone probably knows by now, that an important character dies in this story. The only complaint I have about this book is that I think Rowling goes too far with Harry's angst. I realize that it's important to the development of the character, but in some parts he gets so carried away with anger and self-pity that it's hard to like him, especially when he's behaving badly towards his friends. Even so, the book is well worth reading and any fans of Harry Potter won't want to miss it (that is, if there are any left who haven't read it yet!)
