Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Teens
Description:Young Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father) meets an alley cat who tells him about a baby dragon being held prisoner by the wild animals on Wild Island. The animals use him to fly them across the river and treat him badly. So Elmer sets off, taking a backpack filled with chewing gum, two dozen pink lollypops, a package of rubber bands, black rubber boots, a compass, a toothbrush and tube of tooth paste, six magnifying glasses, a very sharp jackknife, a comb and a hairbrush, seven hair ribbons of different colors, an empty grain bag with a label saying, "Cranberry," clean clothes, and food. Elmer has many adventures along the way, but being a resourceful boy, he uses all the stuff in his backpack to overcome his challenges.
Mom's rating: 5.0 wands Mom's Review:This is a charming and gentle story perfect for younger children, although older children and adults may enjoy it as well. There's nothing overly scary in it, and watching Elmer solve the various challenges he meets is a delight. Dragon fans will enjoy reading about the dragon (yellow and blue striped!), Elmer's flight, and, in the third tale, the dragon's multi-colored family. The charming illustrations, by the author's stepmother Ruth Chrisman Gannett, add a lot to the story.
