Description:

Ambitious young magician Nathaniel is now working for the government in the office of Internal Affairs. Nathaniel is soon put in charge of pursuing the Resistance, the group of rebels working to undermine the magical ruling class. Nathaniel is kept busy between dealing with the resistance and battling the politics in the magical world. But when something mysterious begins to wreak havoc and destruction, and Nathaniel is blamed for a failure to prevent it, he is forced to once again call on Bartimaeus.

Mom's Review:

Fans of the Bartimaeus Trilogy will enjoy this book, but in some ways it is a frustrating book. Bartimaeus is just as cheeky and interesting as before, and Kitty makes an interesting new character. But Nathaniel is more arrogant and self-centered than ever and there are too few passages told from Bartimaeus' point of view. Nathaniel was never a very likeable character, but at least in the first book, he evoked some sympathy because of his situation. In this book, he behaves so abominably and selfishly that the reader can't help wishing that Bartimaeus would teach him a lesson once and for all. The djinni Bartimaeus is far more human than the 'human' magician Nathaniel. I don't know if Jonathan Stroud intended for Nathaniel to be so unlikeable in this book, but I hope that in the third book Nathaniel will grow and improve from his contact with Kitty and Bartimaeus.
