Things are going quite badly for the Edge! Cowlquape has been murdered by Vox Verlix, who has been ruling as a tyrant over the Edge! A seperate group of academics has split off and is living in the sewers of undertown, calling themselves "Librarian Academics". Meanwhile, a horrid sickness, called stone sickness, is spreading. Stone sickness causes flight rocks to crumble and decay, even the rock of NewSanctaphrax has to be supported by wooden supports! Vox Verlix built a horrid "tower of night" in which he uses undertown folk as slaves, and he also built a great stretching wooden road, called the Mire Road, that stretches from the beginning of the Mire to the Deepwoods. Soon after, Vox Verlix was thrown out of the tower of night, which was taken over by Orbix Xaxis, and the great Mire Road was taken over by the shrykes. Now, Vox has little power, even among the undertowners. A young librarian academic, Rook Barkwater, is sent into the beautiful Deepwoods to learn, along with two other apprentice librarian academics. They will have a perilous journey ahead of them, and Rook will need everything he has inside him to succeed.

Very good, By far the best of the Edge Chronicles! The treatise voyage is very well written. I can just feel as though I am watching a movie. If you are enjoying the edge chronicles, don't miss this one!
