Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Teens
Description:The Varden have achieved a temporary victory, although at great cost, and now Eragon must go to the elves' city of Ellesmera to complete his training. But it won't be easy; if he is to have a chance to confront Galbatorix, training that should take years must somehow be compressed into a few months. On top of that, Eragon continues to suffer from the injury he received in his battle with Durza. It's uncertain whether he will ever be strong enough to do what needs to be done.
Meanwhile, Eragon's cousin Roran has troubles of his own. The Ra'zac have returned to Carvahall, and Roran finds himself in a terrible predicament.
A new Eldest Deluxe Edition, released August 22, 2006, includes a sneak peak of book 3, a full-color foldout poster, an excerpt from the history of Alagaesia, never-before-seen art by the author, and a complete list of people, places, things, and dwarf clans.
Mom's rating: 4.5 wands
Mom's Review:Eldest is a much better book than Eragon. Paolini's writing style has matured nicely, and Eldest is an engrossing story with plenty of excitement and a few surprises along the way. Both Eragon and his cousin Roran really grow up in this book, and it's interesting to see the different paths that bring them to maturity. Eragon faces a variety of challenges, from navigating the politics of the Varden and the different races, to completing his training, to battle...well, you'll have to see that for yourself. Roran's story is the unexpected bonus in this book, and it's a pleasure watching him develop into a warrior and leader of men, even if the circumstances that force the transformation are painful. All-in-all, Eldest is a well done and enjoyable book.
