Description:

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, and like most hobbits, he likes his routine. He likes his meals on time, and he likes to sit and smoke his pipe. In short, Bilbo doesn't seem like the type to go on an adventure. So when thirteen dwarves show up on his doorstep, and Bilbo finds himself going on an adventure without even bringing his pocket handkerchief, unexpected things are bound to happen. The dwarves and Bilbo set out for the Lonely Mountain, where they hope to liberate the Dwarves ancestral home and treasure from the dragon, Smaug. Somewhere along the way, Bilbo finds within himself the soul of hero and finds that, just maybe, he has a knack for adventures after all.

Mom's Review:

The Hobbit is a perfect introduction to Tolkien for kids. Lighter and less gory than its big brother The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has everything that a fantasy fan could ask for: elves, dwarves and goblins; dragons and treasure; adventure and humor, and even a wizard named Gandalf. There is some battle and death, so it may not be appropriate for younger kids, but most kids will love this story. Kids old enough for the story but too young for the reading level of the book will enjoy hearing it read aloud. In fact, I highly recommend the audio book version narrated by Rob Inglis; he really brings the book to life, with different voices for every character!
