Description:

When four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, are sent to stay at the rambling old house of a professor in the country, they discover a magical wardrobe in the Professor's house. Going into the wardrobe, they find themselves in the magical land of Narnia. But Narnia is under the control of an evil witch, who has cursed the land into eternal winter (but never Christmas!) It's up to the four children to defeat the witch, save Narnia, and restore spring to the land.

Mom's Review:

I first read this book as a child, and it's just as magical today as it was then. As a child, I was sure that if I found the right portal I would be able to go to Narnia. Narnia is a wonderful land (when it's not under the witch's spell) where animals talk, dryads and naiads dance, and children can be kings and queens and go on adventures. And most of all, there is the lion Aslan, both terrible and loving, watching over it all. Aslan guides the children but doesn't control them, allowing them to find themselves even if it means making mistakes. One can't help but love Aslan. There are some scenes in this book that may be too intense for sensitive children, so parents should use their own judgement.

Note: I numbered this as the first book in the series, even though some modern versions list The Magician's Nephew as book 1 and this one as book 2. Even though The Magician's Nephew takes place before this one, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was really meant to be read first,
