Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Teens
Description:Emrys remembers nothing from the time before he washed ashore on the coast of Wales. He doesn't even know if the woman with him, who calls herself Branwen, is his mother, even though she claims that she is. Branwen refuses to answer any of his questions, so Emrys is left with a hole where his memories should be and an ache to know who he is and where he comes from. As he grows up living in a hut with Branwen, he learns that he has certain powers, but also learns through hard experience to fear those powers and makes a vow never to use them. David's Review:Good book with interesting plot. We've all heard of Merlin, but how did it come to happen? The characterization is great. Mom's Review:Think of Merlin and the picture that immediately comes to mind is an old man with a beard. But who was Merlin really? He certainly wasn't always old; what was he like as a boy and how did he become the towering figure of myth that we all know and love? These are the questions that T.A. Barron set out to explore, and his answer makes for a deep and evocative story. Much of the story moves slowly; don't expect it to be an edge of your seat ride - it's more a story about a boy trying to find himself than anything. But don't worry, there are plenty of adventures and surprises in store and the story moves towards a worthy climax. Shim is my favorite character; you'll find yourself quoting his humorous statements long after you finish the book. All Editions:
