Description:

Sabriel is the daughter of the Abhorsen, the necromancer who is responsible for protecting the world from the dead who return to the world of the living. But Sabriel has grown up at a boarding school outside the wall of the Old Kingdom, and although she has studied Charter Magic and her father has taught her the ways of the Book of the Dead, she knows very little about the Old Kingdom, where the border between life and death is the weakest. When Sabriel's father is trapped in the land of the dead, Sabriel must travel to the Old Kingdom in order to rescue him. But in the Old Kingdom, she encounters an old evil bent on destroying everything of value in the Old Kingdom and beyond.

Mom's Review:

Garth Nix has created a highly imaginative and fascinating world in which magic and technology exist side by side. At first Sabriel annoyed me a little - for the first part of the book she makes a lot of mistakes and seems bent on destroying everything her ancestors have built. But, like all good characters, she grows and develops into a competent and likeable character.

This book is not for the squeamish - there are plenty of grotesque undead and horrifying battles. There is also one mildly sexual scene; nothing explicit, it's basically just some moans overheard through a wall. The book should be fine for teens and some older children. Parents may want to consider prereading it to decide for themselves if it is appropriate.
