Description:

When Peer Ulfsson's father dies, Peer is forced to go and live with his cruel and greedy Uncles, Baldur and Grim, in Trollsvik. Peer's life would be unbearable if it weren't for two new friends: a girl named Hilde who lives on a neighboring farm, and a mischevious house spirit called Nis. But Trollsvik isn't like other towns; they "have trolls like other people have rats and mice." The trolls are up to something, and Uncle Baldur and Uncle Grim are involved somehow. When Peer finds out their plans, it's up to him to overcome his fears and try to stop them.

Mom's Review:

Tired of wizards and dragons and goblins? Try trolls for a change! This book makes a nice change of pace from typical fantasy fare. The Norse folklore gives a great flavor to an exciting story filled with interesting characters. The Uncles are positively grimm (pun intended) and make the Dursleys look like nice people. My favorite character is Nis, the house spirit who cleans the house in exchange for a bowl of groute every night; I'd like to have him around my house! There are a couple of pretty suspenseful moments, but most kids should have no problem with it.
