Fantasy and Science Fiction for Children and Teens
Description:In a fall reminiscent of Alice's fall down the rabbit hole, Gregor and his toddler sister Boots fall though an air duct in the laundry room, and find themselves in a strange world deep under the ground. This is a world of giant rats and giant roaches and strange, pale-skinned people who fly around on giant bats. The people of the Underland think that Gregor may be the warrior who has been prophesied to save their world. Gregor doesn't feel like a warrior; he just wants to find a way home for his sister and himself. But when Gregor finds out that his father, who mysteriously disappeared 2 years, 7 months, and 13 days ago, may be in the Underland, Gregor puts his life on the line on a quest that could save or doom the Underland.
Mom's rating: 5.0 wands Mom's Review:This is a great adventure story - one of those books you can't put down until you finish. The characters are well developed and interesting, and the plot really moves along. Gregor makes a good hero - he has just the right mix between his inherent sense of responsibility and his initial reluctance to help to make him believable, and watching him grow into his role is a real pleasure. I will warn you that the prophecy predicts that some members of the quest will die, so you can expect some deaths in this book. The deaths are handled empathically, but sensitive children may find it too intense. But for those who can handle the deaths, I highly recommend this book.
